Platelets are fragments of cells in the blood and are best known for their ability to help the blood clot. However, they also contain a variety of proteins called growth factors.
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is built on the idea that these growth factors can support healing. Blood is taken from the person being treated and put into a centrifuge that spins at high speed. This process separates the blood components. The concentrated platelets are then injected into the effected area. The platelets contain growth factors that trigger cell growth, speed healing, and stimulate regeneration in the treated area.
